includes afternoon tea

Date: Wednesday 25th August 2010
County: Hampshire
New Excursion

This Excursion is fully booked. Please telephone our office to be placed on a waiting list. This new and fascinating day out takes you on a journey through the countryside to the east and south of the city of Winchester. The two main rivers running through the heart of this area are the Meon and the Itchen. Both are famous for the clean, fast-running water that makes them ideal for the growing of watercress. As well as seeing watercress growing we will learn something about this natural superfood – did you know, for example, that watercress contains over 15 vitamins, has more vitamin C than oranges and more iron than spinach? We shall explore pretty villages such as West Meon, Meonstoke, Wickham and Bishops Waltham. You will have heard of the “Watercress Line” but did you also know that the railway line through the Meon Valley was nicknamed the “Strawberry Line”? There will be time to find lunch in Winchester. Then in the afternoon we continue through more of the watercress villages including The Worthies and Itchen Abbas to the handsome Georgian town of Alresford, the hub of the watercress industry. There will be the chance to buy some fresh watercress to take home, and to round off the day we include afternoon tea with cheese and watercress scones at a tearoom in Alresf Includes afternoon tea.
