Itinerary Day 1 (Sat) We take the short sea crossing to France, continuing through Belgium and Luxembourg into Germany, with an overnight stop at the Best Western Victor’s Residenz, Saarbrucken. Day 2 (Sun) We travel through the Black Forest and Switzerland to Feldkirch for a 5-night stay. Day 3 (Mon) A full day excursion through the Bregenzerwald with a visit to a traditional cheese maker. Then we take the little Walderbahnle Mountain Railway from Bezau to Schwarzenberg before returning via the breathtaking Bodelpass. Day 4 (Tue) We drive to Rheineck where we board a 110-year-old cog railway to Walzenhausen, known as “the balcony over Lake Constance”. Enjoy a panoramic view of the Lake and the Appenzell Mountains. We continue along the southern shore of Lake Constance to Mainau. This so-called “Flower Island” is a paradise of flowers and plants, with palm trees, oranges and other exotic treasures. There are majestic baroque palace buildings, a palm house, herb garden, arboretum, and a butterfly house. Subject to sailing times it may also be possible to take a boat trip (optional) on Lake Constance. Day 5 (Wed) We travel by local bus into Feldkirch and take a guided tour of the medieval city, ending at the impressive Schattenburg Castle (admission not included). Day 6 (Thu) The tradition-rich rural town of Altstatten has grand baroque buildings and historic arcades. From here we take a cogwheel train into the charming Appenzell region with its decorative farmhouses and picturesque hilly landscape. Enjoy a stroll in the town of Appenzell soaking up the atmosphere and sampling the local honey cakes or pear bread. This afternoon we treat our taste buds and discover the secret of Swiss chocolate making with a visit to the Maestrani Chocolate Factory near St.Gallen. The visit provides an opportunity to buy some delicious “souvenirs” to take home. Day 7 (Fri) We say a fond farewell to our Austrian hosts and drive to Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance to visit the fascinating Zeppelin Museum. The main attraction is a 40 metre long reconstruction of part of the airship Hindenburg. For the final night of the tour we return to Saarbrucken Day 8 (Sat) To Calais for the ferry home. A taxi will take you to your door.
