Itinerary Day 1 (Sun) A taxi collects you from your home. We drive to Folkestone for the Channel crossing by Eurotunnel to Calais. It is about 260 miles to our hotel, and the route takes us through Belgium and the Ardennes to Bitburg. Dinner at the Dorint this evening. Day 2 (Mon) We make our way to the village of ZELL on the Mosel. Here we visit the vineyard of Peter Weiss for an entertaining and informative talk on wine making and a tasting of the famous and sought after “Black Cat” wine. We shall then follow the winding River to BERNKASTEL KUES. The pedestrianised town square is completely surrounded by half-timbered houses from the 17th century, and the Renaissance City Hall built in 1608. Also well known is the very small and narrow “Spitzhauschen” (the Pointed House), which dates back to 1416. We spend the afternoon exploring the town before returning to the Dorint for dinner. Day 3 (Tue) This morning we visit the CITY OF LUXEMBOURG. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small, landlocked country bordered by France, Belgium and Germany, with a population of less than half a million people. The capital city is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking two rivers. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a unique charm. In order to show you as much as possible we include a tour on the miniature tourist train through the valleys and ramparts of the City with spectacular views and an informative commentary. This afternoon we drive to VIANDEN, a small medieval town nestling in the valley of the Our River. We will stop at a great viewpoint overlooking the magnificent restored castle and there will be time to soak up the ambience at the terrace cafes along Grand Rue and take the chairlift for a gorgeous panorama over the romantic Our Valley. Day 4 (Wed) A little over half an hour’s drive from our Hotel is TRIER. Situated on the banks of the Mosel, Trier claims to be Germany’s oldest city, founded in around 16 BC. It is well known for preserved Roman and medieval buildings, including the Porta Nigra, the Roman amphitheatre and the huge Basilica of Constantine. We return to Bitburg after lunch for an afternoon in which to enjoy the leisure facilities at the Hotel or, perhaps, take a gentle stroll around the lake. Day 5 (Thu) We return to the Mosel Valley, this time to delightful COCHEM. The historic town lies on a bend in the River between the Eifel and Hunsruck regions with a fairy tale castle perched on a rock high above the narrow streets and half-timbered houses. After time to explore and find lunch enjoy a cruise along the Mosel and through one of the locks to BEILSTEIN. This must be one of the prettiest of the wine-growing villages along the River, often described as “the Sleeping Beauty of the Mosel”. Take some time to look around before rejoining the coach. Day 6 (Fri) After breakfast we head back to Calais for our afternoon crossing through the Channel Tunnel. We reach Sussex during the early evening for taxis to your door.
