Brittany and the Finistere

Nestled in one of the most beautiful bays in Brittany, Concarneau is a charming town with a medieval centre and thriving fishing harbour. The historic towns and villages of the Finistère have a rich and well-preserved heritage, some of which we will discover on our new tour. We will be visiting at a quieter time of the year, when many of the tourists will have left, enabling us to appreciate this delightful region of France all the more.

Day 1 - Thursday

Join your drivers and fellow passengers on the coach and make the short journey to Newhaven for the Channel crossing with DFDS Ferries. During the 4-hour voyage to Dieppe enjoy the on board facilities including a restaurant, bar and shop. We drive south, crossing the Seine on the impressive Pont de Normandie and arriving at the Mercure Hotel in Lisieux for an overnight stay including buffet dinner and breakfast.

Day 2 - Friday

We leave Normandy today and cross into Brittany, where our destination is Concarneau, a walled town and fishing port in the Finistère department. We will be spending four nights at the Hotel de l'Ocean, with buffet breakfasts and 3 course evening meals.

Day 3 - Saturday

A day at leisure in Concarneau begins with a ride on the town's little tourist train. During the 40-minute tour we will learn about the history of Concarneau, its fishermen, canneries and artists. The most popular attraction is the Ville Close. This old stone fortified town has narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants, and you can take a stroll around the ramparts for good views over the area. At the Musée de la Pêche you can find out about the fishing industry and visit an old trawler.

Day 4 - Sunday

Today we will make our way to the seaside resort of Benodet, from where we embark on a river cruise along the Odet River, one of the most beautiful in France. We will pass through wooded landscapes, punctuated by castles, manor houses and forgotten creeks, with an informative commentary. Later we drive to Locronan. This exquisite village, one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, is named after a revered Irishman who settled here in the Dark Ages. Its beauty stems from the success of local weavers and merchants who supplied sails to the French, Spanish and English navies. The entire village is a listed historic monument and is often used as a film set.

Day 5 - Monday

First to Quimper, the cultural heart of Brittany. The city's crowning glory is its gothic cathedral, which dominates the old town. Next stop will be at a rustic cider farm at nearby Ergué-Gabéric, where a tour and tasting are included. We round off the day with a visit to Pont-Aven, the pretty 'village of artists'. Historic watermills along the banks of the River Aven provide a scenic backdrop to the town that is famous as an artists' retreat and for the invention, in 1920, of delicious butter biscuits called galettes.

Day 6 - Tuesday

We bid farewell to Brittany and return to Normandy to visit Mont-Saint-Michel. It is one of Europe's most unforgettable sights, a magical island topped by a gravity-defying medieval monastery. The Island and its bay were one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and there are over 60 listed buildings within the commune. There will be time to cross the causeway, stroll through the narrow streets, and visit the shops and restaurants. At the end of the afternoon we will drive to the port of Ouistreham near Caen to join Brittany Ferries for their overnight sailing. Enjoy a restful night's sleep in one of the ship's comfortable cabins with private facilities.

Day 7 - Wednesday

Arriving in Portsmouth at breakfast time, we re-join the coach for the short journey home to Sussex and meet the taxis that will take you to your door.

HOTEL DE L’OCEAN, CONCARNEAU

 

This charming family run hotel is situated directly opposite a beautiful beach, the Plages Sables Blancs, on the edge of the town. The emphasis is on warm hospitality and good Breton cuisine. There are 71 bedrooms, accessed by a lift. The Hotel has a heated covered swimming pool. On the night of arrival dinner will comprise a set menu, and on subsequent evenings there will be a choice of two main courses.
