Classic German Christmas markets

Gelsenkirchen * Dusseldorf * Dortmund * Essen


On this tour we discover the festive traditions and local ways which make this part of the world so charming. From our base in Gelsenkirchen we explore Christmas markets in Dusseldorf, Dortmund and Essen, and visit Wuppertal, where we will ‘fly’ above the city in an iconic and unique transport system.

Day 1 - Friday

An early taxi from your home to the coach. We head to Folkestone and take the Eurotunnel* to France. The journey through Belgium and Holland to our hotel in Gelsenkirchen is around 400km. A welcome drink, awaits our arrival, followed by a buffet dinner.


Day 2 - Saturday

After breakfast we drive to Wuppertal where we board the famous 'Schwebebahn' (Floating Railway) for an amazing journey, winding between the rooftops on a track that follows the river. We will ride in the historic Kaiserwagen, the personal carriage of the eccentric Kaiser Wilhelm II. Dating from 1901, it is the world's oldest elevated electric railway with hanging cars. We continue to Dortmund which has one of the biggest Christmas Markets in Germany, with over 300 stalls encircling a gigantic Christmas Tree creation made up of 1,700 individual trees.

Day 3 - Sunday

Today we visit Dusseldorf, which has a number of markets spread around the city. You will find glittering Christmas decorations, craft stalls and plenty of seasonal treats at seven different locations, all within easy walking distance. Dusseldorf sits on the Rhine, and has acclaimed art galleries and museums.

day 4 - Monday

Our Christmas market today will be Essen, where the centre of the Kennedyplatz is draped in a glittering canopy of Christmas lights. Quieter than Dusseldorf and Dortmund, it has around 250 stalls with unique gifts and products from around the world, and is one of the most impressive Christmas markets in Germany. Later there will be a chance to explore stylish Gelsenkirchen which has its own Christmas Market, just a short stroll from our Hotel. Enjoy mulled wine with your drivers and fellow passengers before a final dinner.

Day 5 - Tuesday

After breakfast we will load the luggage and drive back to Calais. Then through the Channel Tunnel and home to Sussex, where taxis will be waiting

Maritim is a highly respected German hotel chain, and our 4-star hotel occupies a peaceful location next to Gelsenkirchen’s Stadgarten central park. All 222 cosy bedrooms have balconies overlooking the park or town. The Hotel has a swimming pool, sauna and wellness area. There is a lift to all floors. The Maritim serves an extensive buffet breakfast, and a three-course buffet dinner with tea/coffee.
