Devizes and the Wonder of the Waterway

The coach will take you across Salisbury Plain to Devizes in Wiltshire. The historic town has a colourful medieval past, with over 500 listed buildings, a large Market Place, and a wide range of traditional shops and old coaching inns. After time for lunch, join canal enthusiast Mark for gentle stroll (about 1 mile each way) along the towpath of the Kennet & Avon Canal to the Caen Hill Locks, a scheduled ancient monument.This amazing feat of engineering, built by John Rennie, has its heart a flight of 16 locks that plunge dramatically down the hillside into the Avon Valley. Mark will explain a little about their history and construction and there will be a chance to purchase refreshments in the cafe before walking back to the coach.  Those who do not wish to join the walk can spend the afternoon in Devizes.
