Day 2 - Wednesday

We continue past Stuttgart, heading south towards the Alps. We will be staying for the next two nights in a good 3-star plus or 4-star hotel in Garmisch Partenkirchen, a beautiful town in the Bavarian Alps located at the base of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. It was founded by uniting the two towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen by a decree of Adolf Hitler to bring the 1936 Winter Olympics to Germany.

Day 3 - Thursday

A day off from the coach today, as we travel by cogwheel train and cable car to the Zugspitze which, at 2,962 metres above sea level, is Germany's highest mountain. Our train journey takes in gentle views of fertile farmland and pretty meadows, before climbing into the increasingly dramatic scenery of Hell Valley and spiky mountain peaks. The final ascent to the summit is by cable car, passing over the world's highest steel ropeway towers, with views of Lake Eibsee. Time to visit the terrace restaurant and enjoy the impressive panoramic view across four countries before heading back down the mountain.

B, D

Day 4 - Friday

After breakfast we will visit Linderhof Palace. One of 'Mad' King Ludwig II's Bavarian castles, it features ornately decorated rooms, a grand staircase, and sumptuous formal gardens and fountains. This afternoon we continue past Lake Constance to the Black Forest for a 5-night stay at the Schwarzwald Hotel in Gengenbach.

B, D

Day 5 - Saturday

Enjoy an excursion to Freiburg, known as "the Jewel of the Black Forest", with its beautiful cathedral. Then to Titisee, a popular tourist village, where we will take a lake cruise.

B, D

Day 6 - Sunday

A day for relaxing and exploring Gengenbach, a town of towers, medieval walls and half-timbered houses. The baroque tower of St.Marien's Church dominates the town centre, and the 18th century Town Hall is one of the most beautiful in Germany.

B, D

Day 7 - Monday

We take a scenic drive along the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse, the Black Forest High Road, and visiting Lake Mummelsee before arriving in the fashionable spa town of Baden Baden. After time to explore, we will take the funicular railway to the top of the 2,191-foot Merkur Mountain.

B, D

Day 8 - Tuesday

We travel to the old walled town of Villingen, and join the Black Forest Railway for a journey including loops, tunnels and a high viaduct. Then we visit the Black Forest Open Air Museum to discover the history and culture of the region. Explore the preserved Vogtsbauernhof farmstead and other historical buildings from different regions of the Black Forest, including sawmills, barns, a chapel and a granny house

Day 9 - Wednesday

We leave the Black Forest and drive to Riquewihr, a town on the Alsace Wine Route. It is a medieval gem, one of 'The Most Beautiful Villages in France', and provides the opportunity for a morning coffee stop and to stock up with some of the region's world-famous wines. We continue through the mountains of the Vosges for an overnight stop near Reims.
