Simply Suffolk

Suffolk is an often-overlooked destination, and retains a quiet, quintessential charm.

Suffolk is an often-overlooked destination, and retains a quiet, quintessential charm. We will explore some of the county’s pretty towns and villages with their half-timbered pastel coloured houses that exude the charm of a bygone era. Excursions include a Tudor Manor House & Gardens, a cruise on the Orwell, picturesque Southwold and Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park.

Day 1 - Monday

Once everyone is onboard, we will drive to the picturesque village of Dedham. Set by the River Stour, Dedham is in the heart of Constable Country, and it was here that Britain's greatest landscape artist went to school. The High Street is lined with Georgian-fronted houses and old inns. There will be time for lunch, and we will be joined by a local guide for a leisurely stroll around the village and a visit to the magnificent 15th century church that was built from the wealth of the medieval cloth industry.

Day 2 - Tuesday

This morning we will visit Snape Maltings. Set on the River Alde, the original purpose of the Maltings was the malting of local barley for beer. Today the collection of Victorian buildings has been repurposed into shops, galleries, restaurants and a world-famous concert hall. We will continue through some of Suffolk's pretty villages to the seaside town of Southwold which lies at the mouth of the River Blyth. Southwold is known as the home of Adnams Brewery and Distillery, and is a fascinating place to explore. It has a thriving market town atmosphere with a pier, a sandy beach, old pubs and tearooms, and quirky gift shops.

Day 3 - Wednesday

We drive to Orwell Quay in Ipswich to join the purpose-built pleasure boat Orwell Lady. A two-and-a-half-hour cruise will take us downriver to view 'The Cathouse', a former smugglers haunt, learn the true origins of Naval 'Grog' and reach Pin Mill, former home of Arthur Ransome. This afternoon we will take a walk on the wild side at Jimmy's Farm, as featured on the Channel 4 TV series. Jimmy's Farm is the vision of pig farmer Jimmy Doherty and his wife Michaela and has taken years of dedication and hard work to achieve their dream. With over 80 species and breeds, the Wildlife Park plays host to traditional, rare and exotic animals. From crocodiles, camels and capybara to pigs, skunks and guinea pigs - there's lots to see!

Day 4 - Thursday

A local day, starting with a visit to Woodbridge. This historic little riverside town is the 'gem' in Suffolk's crown. Take a walk by the River to the Tide Mill, maybe spot the local seal, explore the Market in the shadow of the beautiful Shire Hall, the small independent shops and fabulous foodie venues. This afternoon we will take a short drive to Helmingham Hall. The moated Manor House was begun by John Tollemache in 1480 and has been in the same family ever since. Helmingham is famous for its Grade 1 listed gardens, surrounded by a 400-acre deer park.

Day 5 - Friday

We will load the luggage and say our goodbyes to the Ufford Park before heading to Ickworth. This stately home (National Trust) was home to the eccentric Hervey family and has opulent rooms, family history and works of art. There will be time for lunch and to enjoy the Italianate Garden and manicured grounds. Enjoy the herbaceous borders, walled kitchen garden, herb, knot, rose and wild gardens.
